The CDC is now recommending everyone to wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public, if you have shortage of surgical mask, it’s time to make your face mask to protect yourself and others. Make a fabric face mask is not a difficult project, sewing beginner can do it. Followings are tutorials of different style of face masks, choose one and start to make your own now! (Be noted: Fabric face mask is not as effective as surgical mask, in case you have to go to crowded place and high-risk place (e.g hospital),  it is recommended to wear surgical mask, rather than fabric face mask.)

Before starts the project, you need to prepare materials and tools as followings (quantities and size depends on style):

  1. Main fabric (front of mask)
  2. Lining fabric (back of mask)  (Better choose fabrics that comfortable to breath, such as cotton fabric)
  3. Elastic bands / bias tapes/Hair ties (depends on your preference)
  4. Sewing machine (if you don’t have this, just prepare sewing thread and needles)
  5. Few sewing pins/sewing needles (for fixing fabric when sewing)
  6. Wire for mask (depends on style or your preference)
  7. Scissor
  8. Pen/pencils (optional – for beginners)

Types of Fabric Face Mask:

1. 3D Style 1

This type of face mask is the easiest one for sewing beginner. The pattern is quite simple, you are required to cut one pattern only and sew fabric together. This design is naturally cover your face from nose to chin, and not necessary adding the wire for nose bar (it’s depends on your choice, you can also add wire if you need). If you would like to add filter in the middle of mask , next tutorial will be good for you.

2. 3D Style 1 (with Filter Pocket)

The appearance of this mask is same with previous one, but this seems the popular type now as it is easy to make and is allowed to insert face mask filters in the middle for better protection during Coronavirus pandemic.

3. 3D Style 2 (with Filter Pocket)

To make this style of mask, it may be a bit complicated for beginner, but it is probably the most comfortable one comparing with other style. Some people like this style due to its unique appearance, the coverage is good and the design is allowed more space inside the mask. Also, this is allowed to insert filter for better protection. If you are beginner, I would still recommend to make this style for challenge after you had made the easiest type.

6. Surgical Mask Style (with Filter Pocket)

This style is same as previous one, but with filter pocket, some people want to add their surgical mask as filter to extend the life of their disposable mask. Also, in this tutorial, you can learn how to add the elastic band and bias tape in a mask. Elastic band is easy to wear the mask while bias tape provides better coverage, you may choose depends on your preference.

Recommendation

In case you don’t have any or just left few of disposable surgical masks on hand, I would recommend to start to make fabric face mask with filter pocket, so that you can insert filter for better protection during Coronvirus pandemic. In case, you just would like to repeat use of your disposable mask, you can choose any style you like and wear it as a cover. On the other hand, if you are sewing beginner, starts with 3D style 1 (with filter pocket) will be good as it is relatively easier. No matter which style you choose, REMEMBER to wash fabric face mask every time after you wear. Enjoy fun of DIY mask! Of course, if you have no material or confident to make the mask, you can buy reusable face mask online.
