Due to coronavirus pandemic, mask are sold out. It’s time to make your own face mask. DIY face mask is easy,  sewing beginner can do it!  This tutorial given is to make a 2-layers olson fabric face mask with filter pocket, you can insert face mask filters into the mask for better protection. Let’s follow step-by-step guide, and start to make your fabric face mask at home. (Be noted: if you will go to crowded place and high-risk place (e.g. hospital), it is recommended to wear surgical mask, rather than fabric face mask).

How to Sew an Olson Face Mask?

Before start to sew a mask, you need a mask template and prepare following materials and tools.

Prepare Material and tools for DIY Face Mask

  1. Main fabric (front of mask) x 2 (Better choose fabrics that waterproof or water repellent)
  2. Lining fabric (back of mask) x 2 (Better choose fabrics that comfortable to breath, such as cotton fabric)
  3. Elastic bands x 2 (Approximate length – adult, teens & women: 165mm / child: 115mm / small child: 100mm, recommend measuring the size by yourself as face size are different for everyone)
  4. Sewing machine (if you don’t have this, just prepare sewing thread and needles)
  5. Few sewing pins/sewing needles (for fixing fabric when sewing)
  6. Scissor
  7. Pen/pencils (optional – for beginners)

Simple step-by-step sewing guide: Olson Face Mask with Filter Pocket

Step 1: Cut the pattern of your size on the fabric

Cut two pcs main fabrics, two pcs lining fabrics base on mask pattern. For precisely cut the pattern of your size, you can use sewing pins/needles to fix paper pattern onto the fabric, then follow the paper patterns to cut the fabric.

Step 2: Sew the main fabrics and lining fabrics

After prepare all materials, we start sewing. We will sew two parts of the fabrics, the curved edge and straight edge.

Curved edge

Main Fabrics: Turn the right side of both main fabrics facing each other, wrong side will face to you, we are going to sew the wrong side of fabrics. Follow the curved edge and sew with 5mm seam allowance. (In case you don’t have sewing pins/needles, you can use pen to draw a line on seam allowance for help.)

Lining Fabric: Just do the same with main fabrics.

Turn the right side of both main fabrics facing each other. Lining fabrics are same.

You can use pen to draw a line on seam allowance or use sewing pins if you are beginner.

Follow the curve and sew with 5mm seam allowance

Straight edge

At this step, we will sew the straight edge of lining fabric only, main fabric will be sewed at later step.

Lining Fabric: Double fold the raw edges. Each fold edge is 10mm (20mm in total) and sew the edge. Do it for left and right edge.

Step 3:Merge main and lining fabrics

At this step, we will merge two fabrics by sewing the top and bottom of both fabrics.

Place lining fabric on the main fabric, with right side facing each other, we will sew the top and bottom of wrong side.

Make sure that the curved edge of each fabric is at the same point and use sewing pins to fix the fabrics. Then starts to sew the both top and bottom of the fabrics with 5mm seam allowance. Then turn the right side of face mask out, we go to the next step.

Make sure that the curved edge of each fabric is at the same point

Step 4: Sew the edge of top and bottom on right side of mask

At this step, the right side of main fabric faces to you, we are going to sew the edge of top and bottom to keep the shape well. Remember to fold the end of edge with 5mm seam allowance before sewing.

Step 5: Add elastic bands at straight side of main fabric

At this step, place the top of elastic bands at the top of straight side, bottom of elastic bands to bottom of straight side, and sew it to fix the elastic bands. Then, double fold the edge forward the lining fabric, then sew the edge from top to end.

Place the top of elastic bands at the top of straight side,bottom of elastic bands to bottom of straight side, fix the elastic bands.

Double fold the edge forward the lining fabric and sew the edge from top to end.

Done!


Congratulations! Your own mask is done! Also, you can insert face mask filters  (for adult / for kids) for better protection.
