What is Howlite?

Howlite is a borate mineral that is regularly mined from evaporate deposits. It was first discovered in Nova Scotia in 1868, and subsequently, it was named howlite by James Dwight Dana after its discovery.

Normally, howlite is discovered as irregular nodules, and soon after, more locales reported evaporate deposits similar to what was found in Nova Scotia. Howlite ranges from colorless to white to deep brown. This mineral can either be translucent or transparent depending on the general characteristics of the lode in question.

Howlite

Most howlite is originally white in color, being dyed to bluish green for jewelry.

Because of its intrinsic beauty, howlite is often used for jewelry and other forms of ornamentation. It has a porous texture and lends well to pigmenting and dyeing.

People have even been known to modify the visual characteristics of howlite so that it would resemble other minerals, like turquoise. The veining patterns in howlite are quite similar to turquoise, so it’s no surprise that after dyeing, howlite would pass off as a very convincing turquoise imitation.

Physically, howlite does not exhibit crystalline cleavage. Common howlite is either colorless or white. In terms of diaphaneity, it is translucent, and it has a brittle, conchoidal fracture.

Upon fracturing, small conchoidal fragments can be seen. It is also relatively soft as a mineral, with a hardness of only 2.5-3.5. You can scratch howlite with your fingernail or a small penny or coin. It has fluorescent luminescence and exhibits bright sky blue luminescence when exposed to long UV rays. It has an earthly or dull luster and is nonmagnetic. Basic streak tests will reveal a white streak.

How is Howlite Made?

Blue howlite bracelet is the most common howlite jewelry.

Howlite jewelry and ornamentations are often made through carving and lapidary work. It is also often marketed to collectors and regular consumers in its original form. Some manufacturers misleadingly brand or call it “white turquoise” so if you see anything like that on the market, you are not looking at genuine turquoise, what you have right there is howlite.

Be wary also of gemstones named “white buffalo stone” as no such things exist. Jewelers and jewelry stores and similar establishments should be upfront about the real names of the gemstones that they sell, so they won’t end up misleading customers.

Why Howlite Stone is Popular?

Howlite has unique metaphysical and spiritual properties. It is associated with the astrological sign Gemini, with the element air, and its vibrational frequency or band is number two.

Typically, howlite jewelry comes in a variety of colors as they can be dyed. Howlite can appear colorless, white, or fine grey. There will also be instances when the howlite will exhibit a matrix network of veining. Veining usually occurs when the host rock becomes part of the mineralization, or if additional elements or minerals enter the howlite as it is being formed as a mineral.

Howlite is associated with three main things: inspiration for life, creative expression/power, and artistry. Howlite can help clear your mind so you will become more confident and inspired to find your place in the world. If you have been having trouble expressing yourself creatively, use howlite to draw positive, creative energies toward you.

Artists, writers, and other creative individuals can use howlite to improve their production and to increase their creative energies while working. Howlite is the best friend of creative folk as it draws toward the person energies at the right frequency level. This helps replenish creative power over time, and you will surely feel like brand new when you keep howlite jewelry nearby while working.

Howlite can also help people who struggle with sleeping normally. Insomnia can be extremely stressful especially if it has become chronic, so using gemstones like howlite can help improve your health and mental state, too. As howlite works on normalizing your sleeping cycle, it will also aid in strengthening your memory and stimulation your natural desire to learn.

It works on multiple segments or sectors of your mind and emotional centers, so as you developed a renewed love for learning, you will also notice that excessive negative emotions such as rage, inner pain, and anger will also begin to melt away.

The reason or this is quite simple: you can’t be creative and effective at the same time if you are burdened heavily by emotional baggage. Let howlite free you of all your excess emotional and psychic baggage, so you can have peace of mind and a better handle of your life in general.

Did you know that howlite can also help you related to others better?

In addition to being a calming and balancing stone, howlite is also known for improving the rapport between the wearer and those around him/her. It also facilitates more effective communication so you are not misheard or misinterpreted when you are speaking your mind.

Howlite is excellent gemstones for clearing the throat chakra, as the throat chakra is associated with creativity and self-expression. People who suffer from blocked throat chakras often have difficulty speaking their minds, and the impact of this over time worsens the blockage. Using howlite can remove the blocks on the throat chakra and balance the energies swirling there. The effect of the unblocking will be almost instant – people will feel that they can finally express themselves in an unfettered manner, and they no longer have to be afraid of just being themselves.

Does howlite have a physical impact?

Yes, it does. Like other gemstones, howlite has a distinct effect on the body’s physiology. It is drawn to the skeletal system. It helps improve the retention and utilization of calcium in the body and supports healthy bones.

If you know someone who is suffering from the symptoms of osteoporosis, it might be a good idea to give that person some howlite jewelry. While it may not be able to cure the osteoporosis, the howlite can help with the restoration of strong bones and with the essential retention of calcium, which is necessary if you want to recover from osteoporosis and other similar conditions that have something to do with the retention of calcium in the body, especially in advanced age.
